Tips Decorating Your Nursery

Remember that when decorating your child’s nursery, safety must come before décor. See our Safety Issues section for more information on creating a safe nursery.
Get a feel for the nursery before you begin to decorate. Take note of spots that get direct sunlight in the morning or that are hit by streetlights during the night. You do not want to put your crib in one of these areas as it may cause your baby to wake up earlier than necessary in the morning or make it harder for your baby to fall asleep at night.
Buy furniture that both looks good and is practical. There are
several varieties on the traditional crib and changing table available. Look
for convertible 3-in-1 or 5-in1 cribs, Co-Sleeper cribs that can be placed
adjacent to a bed, foldaway cribs for easy storage, and more. Changing tables
can be purchased with drawers or cabinet
s
to create more storage space.
Remember that you will need lots of storage space. You will need enough space to store clothing, toys, books, etc.
Create a comfortable space to sit in the nursery. Whether it be for lulling your baby to sleep or having a place to read before bedtime, you will want a comfortable chair, rocking chair, or glider in the room.
Choose an area rug over wall-to-wall carpeting. Area rugs can not
only add to the décor of a room, but are much more practical than carpeting.
Carpets collect much more dust and are harder to clean than hardwood floors. It
is also easier to change an area rug than an entire room of carpeting, should it
get too dirty, or you decide to redecorate.

Decide if you want to decorate the room according to a theme or not. There are several adorable themes available to decorate your child’s nursery in. You can choose from trains, jungle, storybook characters, flowers, sports, teddy bears, and many more. However, if you choose not to decorate the room with a common theme, there are several nursery accessories available for you to use to accent your room from mobiles to area rugs, to lamps and window treatments.
Keep the room soothing. Adding too much commotion or stimulation
to the room will make it harder for your baby to slee
p
at night.
Create shelving units that are out of reach for a child. Shelving units out of your child's reach will allow you to store items you do not want your baby to touch or break in the nursery. Remember these shelves may be there for a while, so keep them high enough that they are out of reach even when your child grows.
Don't be afraid to mix and match. Experiment with different patterns and themes within your nursery. This will allow you to use your imagination and get creative with your decorating. Mixing and matching can also be the key to creating a nursery that grows with your child.
